Interests
I'm particularly interested in "small systems", those using 8
and 16-bit microcontrollers to solve a variety of problems in the
areas of control, interface, and data acquisition.
Projects
I've been developing embedded software professionally since the
early 1980's. In that time I've used a variety of languages, tools,
and microcontrollers. Here are some of the more interesting
projects I've worked on over the years:
- Espresso machines. I developed and maintained
the control software for a line of fully-automatic commercial
espresso machines. The machines pour a variety of coffee and milk
drinks at the touch of a button.
- Military avionics. I developed the software
for an airspeed and attitude warning system for the F-117 Stealth
Fighter. This system provided a voice warning to the pilot when he
was "pushing the envelope".
- Subterranean geological imaging system. This
system was sent down an oil well shaft and used ultrasound to image
subterranean cavities that were being considered for underground
storage of oil.
- Commercial avionics. I worked on a series of
designs for flight data acquisition systems, which provided the
primary data stream to the flight recorders on commercial passenger
jets.
